ART+Academy offers weekly art classes for adults, teens and children in Austin and Cedar Park, TX.
Our small groups allow us to take each student from a beginner level to an intermediate-advanced level giving them the opportunity to learn at their own speed. As the student progresses, different medias are introduced: pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, acrylic, collage and mixed media.
The class curriculum is designed to ensure skill development, yet with enough freedom to foster individually creativity.
Classes are planned by the season and divided into 4 week sessions. You can join anytime as long as there is room in the class.
Art classes for Adults. (<- click in the link to go to our new website)
How many adults do you know that say they do not have an “artistic gene” or who say “I don’t know how to draw a straight line?” Most of us stop drawing at about 10 years of age when we are very critical and self-conscious about ourselves. As Pablo Picasso said, “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
Our adult classes offer personalized instruction depending on the experience of the student and their interests. Everyone in the class can work on different projects and at different levels.
For adult students who are beginners, we start with drawing instruction. We like the method of Dr. Betty Edwards, who wrote "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and we use it with our students. As part of this curriculum, we review: contour line, cross contour line, negative space, perspective and basic shading techniques. We mainly use pencil and paper at first. Once basic skills are mastered, we encourage students to work with charcoal and soft pastels and go deeper to understand values and shading.
For experienced students, we have an initial talk to determine the current level of the student and discuss their interests and objectives for the class. We then suggest a series of projects that will strength the skills they need to improve or teach a new medium they have not experienced before. Students can choose from charcoal, pencil, watercolor, soft and oil pastels and acrylics and, in some classes, oils.
Art classes for Teens (<- click in the link to go to our new website)
Our teen classes offer personalized instruction depending on the level of the student and their interests. Everyone in the class can work on different projects and media.
For a beginning student, we always suggest starting with drawing lessons. We use the method of Dr. Betty Edwards, who wrote “Drawing on the Right side of the Brain,” to teach young students how to “see” and draw in a realistic way. As part of the curriculum, we review: contour line, cross contour line, negative space, perspective and basic shading techniques. Once the student learns basic drawing skills, we go deeper into value, observation and shading techniques using charcoal and soft pastels. Through the classes we introduce the concepts of a good composition, drawing or painting from still life and copying some masterpieces. Once drawing skills are mastered, we introduce them to new mediums such as watercolors, mixed-media and acrylics.
For experienced students, we have an initial talk to determine the current level of the student and discuss their interests and objectives of the class. Then we suggest a series of projects that will strength the skills they need to improve or teach a new media they have not experienced before. They can choose from charcoal, pencil, watercolor, soft and oil pastels and acrylics.
Art classes for children 9-12 years old (<- click in the link to go to our new website)
Learning how to draw is a great asset for children of this age. Drawing allows them a way to express themselves, a tool to use when they are bored, a way to express their ideas to others and a source of joy, confidence and self-esteem. However, around 10 years old children become very critical of their art work. This is the age when most people stop drawing because they are convinced they can not do it.
In this class we teach children:
Three-dimensional drawing: Through the review of 12 concepts, the children learn: foreshortening, contour lines, basic perspective, size and other concepts that help make their drawings look 3D. We teach children this by fostering their imagination to create something they do not physically see.
Realistic drawing: Using the proven methods of Dr. Betty Edwards, “How to Draw with the Right Side of the Brain,” we teach children “how to see” so they can do a realistic drawing. This part of the class is introduced in intervals along with the 3D drawings.
Exploring media types: As the children learn basic drawing and they progress, we introduce: charcoal, soft and oil pastels, watercolors, tempera and acrylic paints.
Art classes for 7 - 9 years old children. (<- click in the link to go to our new website)
IThis is a great age for Art Classes. The kids from 7 – 9 are not self-conscious yet about how their art work “should look.” They are very open to ideas and information. Learning how to draw and feeling confident about it will take them safely beyond the age where most of us decided “we do not know how to draw” or about 10 years old. In this class, we have a good balance of drawing from imagination and drawing from observation. Drawing from imagination is very important at this age and teaching them a few art concepts that can be applied to their drawings will open their creativity and imagination. We teach drawing from observation and help students to “see” and notice details that will help them to translate it to paper. We teach about painting in this class including the proper use of brushes, color mixing using watercolors and tempera paint and other mediums such as soft and oil pastels. This class builds confidence and individual creativity in a guided but fun artistic environment.

In this age of discovery, when all they do or create is a moment to celebrate, learning drawing and painting techniques is just another celebration. The kids in this age group are like sponges quickly assimilating all new information.
We teach drawing by deconstructing familiar subjects into geometric shapes that help children "see." Students learn art concepts that help them to improve and enrich their drawings. Eventually, children learn that everything can be drawn using basic shapes and they can start applying it by themselves.
We teach at this young age the proper use of a brush and color mixing using watercolor and tempera paint. The students have the opportunity of exploring other mediums such as collage and oil pastels.

Our mission for kids this age is to encourage, enhance and explore their natural creativity through an art-rich curriculum that includes drawing, painting and collage. At this age, children are still developing their fine motor skills. Through eye-hand coordination exercises, we help improve the way they transfer on paper what they are seeing.
We teach kids how to construct forms using simple shapes, apply basic art elements and concepts that will enrich their art projects.
We help kids learn to use different media and techniques using watercolor, tempera paint, oil pastels and markers.
By using these media in fun-filled lessons, we look to ignite children's imagination and creative exploration. Our aim is to nurture a love for art that touches the hearts and souls of our students. Above all, we value the artistic process over the end product!
